Kingman Island and Heritage Island are islands in Northeast and Southeast Washington, D.C., in the Anacostia River. Both islands are man-made, built from material dredged from the Anacostia River and completed in 1916.

Kingman Island

This large field was formerly an asphalt parking lot until 2016, when it was restored as a meadow with native wildflowers and grasses. This herbaceous-dominated ecosystem hosts wildlife that form a complex and vital food web. The photo you submitted will track the regrowth and seasonal changes of this beautiful landscape.

Upper Meadow North

Virginia Mallow (Sida hermaphrodita) is a rare plant in the DC region, and has an endangered status in the state of Maryland. The chronology photo data is important to follow the progress of the Virginia Mallow population on Kingman Island. Fortunately, we expect a strong recovery due to this plant's high rate of seed production and viability, along with restoration efforts led by our partners the District Department of Energy and Environment and Anacostia Watershed Society.

Upper Meadow South

This unique ecosystem is a shallow depression that is only filled with water for part of the year. The seasonal changes in this habitat support all types of wildlife; many plants and animals spend the dry season as seeds, eggs, or cysts, and then grow and reproduce when the ponds are again filled with water. Birds and small mammals like to use vernal pools as a food and water source.

This lower meadow was created in 2010, and has made a successful transition to a healthy habitat. This herbaceous-dominated ecosystem hosts wildlife that form a complex and vital food web. The photo you submitted will track the long-term and seasonal changes of this beautiful landscape.

Lower Meadow West

The freshwater tidal wetlands on Kingman and Heritage Islands are a beautiful example of successful restoration. Over the last two decades teams of fourth graders have helped replant the mudflats to grow a wetland through a program with our partner Anacostia Watershed Society. Your photo is a valuable addition to the Living Classrooms and Chronolog project, which will track the long-term and seasonal progress of this wetland.
